Welcome
Carefree Cares is the community outreach of the Carefree Boat Club of Charleston to people managing the care of family members with disabilities, special needs, or terminal illness. It's about giving time back to caregivers.
The Need is Great
According to The Rosalynn Carter Institute on Caregiving there is a real "Caregiver Crisis". The facts are stark: “The number of individuals in our society requiring personal assistance due to ill health, chronic conditions and disabilities is at an historic level and growing.” These individuals have very little support and struggle with depression, anxiety, financial distress, unemployment and marital problems (85% of families that have a child with developmental challenges are ripped apart by divorce). In most cases, this leaves a single mom as the only caregiver.
Sadly, cases of abuse and neglect reported among this population are growing at an alarming rate.
How would you answer the tearful plea of this mother?
Her college age son survives a tragic car accident that took the life of his passenger. He survived but with traumatic brain damage. His every need must be attended to including moving his body several times during the night for circulation. She is grateful her son is spared. Yet, there’s no time for the simplest of needs for this mother. She is exhausted, depressed and not sure how long she can keep the pace of holding down a job and care-giving. What do you say when she looks in your eyes to say, “I need a buddy. I need a caregiver. Who’s going to help me when there’s so much that needs to be done for him?”
It is clear that more opportunity exists for caring for the caregiver.
